Description:

Being the best sales person, a great trader or media planner requires skills and technical expertise and knowledge in that area of specialty. Success is based on one’s own performance, rather than that of other people.

Managing and supervising people requires a completely different set of skills. Most of us want to earn more money and the seniority and status that go with a management position looks and sound good but be careful what you wish for……management is often different to what you expect.

Suddenly you cross a line and the other side of the line brings some serious challenges. You may have to discipline a friend. You may have to say no to a request. You usually have to let go of work tasks that you enjoyed. You may have to deal with people’s emotions and up’s and down’s instead of just your own. Importantly your success is now firmly hitched to other people.

So this course outlines the secrets and implications of the management role and asks you to consider whether it’s what you really want. If it is then the session outlines what to expect and crucially what you need to do to get yourself in a position to be promoted.

• Technical expert as manager: why what you know technically will not help you manage and lead other people.
• What does being a manager mean? What do you actually have to start doing and stop doing?
• What attributes do I need to have? How do I currently rate against these if a vacancy came available?
• How important is my technical expertise in the management role?
• Management or staff - where do I stand? Navigating the politics and when it’s right to back your team up and when to uphold management responsibilities.
• So why would you want to be a manager?
• Dressing and behaving for the job you want not the job you’ve got. How to plan your career path to get a management job – in media companies and in agencies.
